  • Overview

The Mental Health Specialist at Sierra is part of the clinical team and aids in maintaining the therapeutic milieu in the classroom. He or she may be the only Mental Health professional in the classroom at times and will be responsible for providing appropriate mental health interventions. The MH Specialist is primarily in the classroom to monitor behaviors, intervene when necessary and provide group rehab services. The MH Specialist should be aware of trigger points that can set off a student and be able to intervene before the student escalates to time away or worse. This can be accomplished by utilizing a variety of techniques. Techniques may include, but are not limited to the following: quietly reminding the client of what his/her goals and objectives are, taking the child outside of the classroom to process what may be bothering him/her, and verbal de-escalation. The Mental Health Specialist also delivers emotional and behavior support to students in a Day Rehab classroom, including community meeting, process groups and individual support to students with emotional disturbances.
